The common thread: Hermes runs more reliably on consumer hardware, handles small models far better, and is being actively stewarded by a team that's visibly responsive to the community.

"Things 'just work' a lot better. When I ask it to do things, it'll create an actual skill, rather than just relying or hoping it'll remember what I want next time. Very easy to set up and switch models — this caused OpenClaw to crash on me constantly."

The practical sticking points around OpenClaw — crashing on model switches, unreliable tool calls with smaller models, a bloated TypeScript codebase — have pushed many developers toward Hermes. In his read, OpenClaw's founder departing for OpenAI, a 125,000-line TypeScript codebase, and a sandbox that blocks tools that actually matter have compounded into a framework that struggles where Hermes thrives — specifically with small, locally-run models. He found a bug where small models couldn't use the MEDIA: syntax, meaning images never arrived. He submitted the fix. It was merged into Hermes the same day.

What Hermes Actually Is

Hermes Agent is Nous Research's open-source Python agent framework. It runs in your CLI and connects through messaging platforms — Telegram, WhatsApp, Slack, Discord. The architecture is built around a multi-level persistent memory system, agent-managed skills, and dedicated machine access that survives restarts. It's powered by OpenRouter and Nous Research's portal subscriptions.

What makes it unusual is the combination: it's not just a chat interface, and it's not just a coding assistant. It spawns isolated subagents, handles scheduled tasks, manages its own tool library, and runs well on hardware most developers already own. Eleven model-specific parsers mean small quantized models actually behave reliably — which has unlocked a new class of experiments on RTX 3060s and 3090s.

What People Are Building

The builds emerging from the community illustrate the range. @glitch_ shipped an early prototype of a growth agent swarm — 11 specialized agents running in parallel with a shared knowledge base, model routing across five LLMs, and an experiment loop cycling at roughly $0.009 per full run.

@rodmarkun built a local anime server tool with full list sync, torrent management, scheduled downloads, and disk automation.

@WeXBT built PrediHermes: a geopolitical prediction system pulling 54+ OSINT modules and running multi-agent simulations against Polymarket contracts — fully AGPL licensed.

What's notable is how fast Nous Research is responding. Co-founder Teknium is visibly engaged — commenting on builds, asking for feedback, integrating community contributions. Browser Use became an official Hermes browser backend after a community build surfaced it and earlier today, Teknium announced a HuggingFace CLI skill is on the way. OpenClaw isn't dead of course, far from it. It still has a larger consumer ecosystem and a more polished UX for personal assistant use cases. If you want a plug-and-play assistant with minimal setup friction and aren't doing custom ML infrastructure, it may still be the right choice. But for developers who want to run local models reliably, extend the system in Python, containerize their setup, or build multi-agent experiments, the tradeoffs have clearly shifted.
